The Department offers research facilities in a wide range of topics including low cost housing and grain storage structures. In addition to these, researches are also carried out in the areas of soil stabilization, concrete from waste materials, ferrocement, design of livestock farms and house hold grains storage structures.
The department has completed number of projects. In the recent past, REFPI, a DFID funded project of the department has created tremendous impacts on dissemination of agricultural equipment in the field. As a result some of the technologies are being locally manufactured and well adopted by the farmers of Bangladesh. Farmers are getting the benefits of these technologies.
The department has collaborative programs with government, institutions and manufacturers such as; BRRI, BARI, DAE, BARD, RDA, BCSIR, Janata Engineering, Mahbub Engineering; with international donors like EC, DFID, GTZ, IDEB and other NGOs. It also offers staff and curriculum development programs for teachers of other educational institutions like; PSTU, HSTU, SAU.
This department carries out research programs in the field of (i) Irrigation Agronomy/Soil and Water Engineering (ii) On-farm Water Management (iii) Agro-Meteorology, (iv) Development, Selection, Testing and Performance of Water Lifting Devices, (v) Design, Layout an construction of Irrigation and Drainage Systems, (vi) Surface and Sub-surface Hydrology/Groundwater etc. For this purpose the department has laboratory facilities, field irrigation laboratory and Weather Yard (Climate Station). The research works are conducted by the teachers through project works of the students as well as through internally and externally supported research schemes/projects. Some of these research works are performed in collaboration with the departments of soil Science, Agronomy, Agricultural Chemistry, Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Finance of this University, the Agricultural Engineering Division of the Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh and other research Institute.
This department actively participates in the training of field engineers, officers related to agricultural development, farmers, field level workers, co-operators through the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC), Graduate Training Institute (GTI), Ford Foundation, Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the department of Agricultural Extension of this University. The department also offers extension services to the farmers, co-operative farms and nation building works and when needed.

In addition to student research under the direct supervision of the academic staffs, the department is involved in research projects sponsored by different donor agencies in the field of post-harvest processing and preservation of plant and animal products, food engineering, food and nutrition, food biotechnology and utilization of by-products from food processing industries.
Research activities are limited to post graduate student research only at this moment. However, couple of research proposal are being processed.
